Team Handball King of the Court 3-on-3
King of the Court on a half court: a champion group of three defends the goal while challenger groups take turns attacking it. Students play small-sided offense and defense at high intensity and practice good sportsmanship when they win or lose the court.
How to play
- Use each half of the court as its own field with a goal. Make eight groups of three in colored pinnies, four per field, and one goalie per goal who switches every 4 minutes.
- One group is the champion and defends; the first challenger group attacks from half court with 25 seconds to score.
- If the challengers score, they become champions and set up on defense; the old champions go to the back of the line. If the defense steals or the goalie saves, the champions score 1 point and stay.
- The next challengers start the moment the attack ends, with no pause. Each group tracks the points it earns as champion.
- Play 8-minute blocks per field; then the top two groups on each field switch fields for the final block.
Rules
- One dribble per player per possession.
- A clear foul gives the challengers a new attack.
- Safety: the waiting line stays off the court behind half court, never next to the goal.
Variations
Easier
Challengers get 35 seconds and the defense may only intercept.
Standard
3-on-3 with a goalie, 25 seconds, and a point for every defensive stop.
Harder
Challengers attack 3-on-2 for 10 seconds before the third defender joins.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays goalie or a neutral passer who always plays with the attack.
- Shyness: keep the same group all period and assign roles before each turn.
- Fitness level: the teacher balances the groups so the court changes hands.
Learning goals
- Solve 3-on-3 situations on offense and defense.
- Keep up the intensity in short attacks with little rest.
- Win and lose with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 4
- colored pinnies: 24
- goals: 2
Teacher tip
If one group never loses the court, reshuffle the groups or cap the champions at five stops in a row. Keep the line moving fast so no one cools down.
