2-on-2 Mini Volleyball with a Neutral Setter
Two-on-two mini volleyball with a neutral setter under the rope who always plays for the team with the ball. It forces teams to build a three-contact play: pass to the setter, who sets it high, then attack over the rope.
How to play
- Stretch two long ropes 2 m high and use cones to mark 5 courts of 4 x 8 m. Make groups of 5: two pairs and a neutral setter in a pinnie (2 min).
- The setter stands under the rope in the middle. One pair serves underhand from the back line.
- The receiver passes the first contact to the setter, who sets it high to the receiver's partner, who sends it over the rope. The setter always turns to face the receiving team.
- A point won with a three-contact play scores 2; without all three contacts, 1. Every 3 minutes a player rotates in as setter, so all five have set within 15 minutes.
- Wrap-up (3 min): discuss why a high pass to the middle makes the setter's job easier.
Rules
- The setter only sets: never sends the ball over or plays balls coming from the other side.
- The first contact may be caught if needed, the third one never.
- Call 'mine,' and nobody leaves their court for a ball in play on another court.
Variations
Easier
The setter catches and tosses the ball high with two hands for the hitter.
Standard
Pass to the setter, set, and send over the rope with double points.
Harder
To earn 2 points, the attack must land in the back zone of the other court, marked with cones.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: spends more time as setter, standing or seated, and may catch and toss.
- Autism: show the role order on a card and announce each change one minute ahead.
- Mixed ability: pairs who struggle use a large balloon; skilled pairs may not catch at all.
Learning goals
- Build a three-contact play in mini volleyball.
- Aim the first pass at the setter.
- Cooperate with a partner and the neutral player toward a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 2
- light balls: 5
- cones: 20
- pinnies: 5
Teacher tip
Most students send the first contact straight over; the double-point rule fixes that on its own. Pick students with good hands as the first setters so the game flows from the start.
