1-on-1 Mini Volleyball Up and Down the River
One-on-one mini volleyball duels on 3 x 3 m courts under a rope 2 m high, using a receive, self-set and send rule. Winners move up a court and losers move down, so everyone plays opponents at their level with no elimination.
How to play
- Stretch two ropes 2 m high and use cones to mark 12 numbered 3 x 3 m courts per side, one player on each side. A student helper keeps time (3 min).
- Serve underhand. The receiver gets three contacts: a forearm pass or set, a self-set straight up, and a set over the rope.
- You win the point when the ball lands on your opponent's side or they send it out. The point winner serves.
- Two-minute rounds: on the whistle, the leader moves up one court toward court 1 and the trailer moves down toward court 12; on court 12 the loser swaps with the helper. Play 6 rounds (15 min).
- Wrap-up (2 min): each student shares their final court and which contact won them the most points.
Rules
- Nobody goes under the rope for a ball while the next court is playing.
- The self-set is required: sending it over on the first contact does not count.
- Players call their own score, and disputed points are replayed.
Variations
Easier
Catch the first contact and send it over with a two-handed toss.
Standard
Receive, self-set and set over on 3 x 3 m courts.
Harder
4 x 4 m courts, sending with a set or forearm pass to open space.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: 2 x 2 m court, rope at 1.5 m and catching on every contact.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: also signal round changes by raising a colored cone.
- Less ball control: a fourth contact or a balloon, which gives more time.
Learning goals
- Link the receive, self-set and send.
- Decide where to send the ball on the opponent's side.
- Accept each round's result with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 2
- light balls: 13
- cones: 48
Teacher tip
The self-set tends to be low and close to the rope, so remind them to push it high and get under it. Up and Down the River sorts levels on its own, so no grouping is needed.
