1v1 Four-Gate Soccer Duels
In a square with a gate on each side, two players go head to head and score by dribbling through any of the four gates. Students practice dribbling moves, changes of direction, and one-on-one defending in short, intense battles.
How to play
- Make groups of 4 and set up a 10 x 10 yard square per group with a 2-yard gate in the middle of each side.
- Two players battle inside while the other two wait outside at two corners, each holding a ball.
- The attacker scores a point by dribbling through any gate; if the defender steals the ball, they attack right away.
- Each duel lasts 30 seconds; then the waiting pair steps in and starts with a pass from the corner.
- After 6 minutes, switch partners within the group so everyone plays everyone.
- In the last 6 minutes, the gate just used to score is closed for the next point.
Rules
- No one may score through the same gate twice in a row.
- Defend without grabbing or pushing; play the ball only.
- If the ball goes out, the player who did not restart last time restarts from the corner.
- No back-to-back duels: everyone rests outside between turns.
Variations
Easier
Widen the gates to 3 yards and let the defender steal only at a walk.
Standard
Play 30-second duels with four 2-yard gates.
Harder
Shrink the gates to 1 yard and require the attacker to stop the ball with the sole right after the gate.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the duel is played with the ball in hand while moving in the wheelchair; the opponent defends on their knees.
- Shyness: start with a trusted partner while all groups play at once, so no one is watching.
- Fitness level: shorten duels to 20 seconds and extend rest to 1 minute.
Learning goals
- Beat a defender with changes of direction and speed.
- Defend by steering the attacker toward a single gate.
- Spot the open gate and attack it quickly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flat disc cones: 56
- soccer balls: 14
Teacher tip
These duels are very intense, so make sure no one goes twice without rest. Teach defenders not to lunge at the ball but to wait low and sideways.
