1-on-1 Self-Pass Volleyball
One-on-one games on narrow 10 x 20 foot courts where each player must self-pass before sending the ball over. Students work on controlling the first touch, finding open space, and calling their own lines.
How to play
- Set up mini courts 10 feet wide and 20 feet long with cones, with a long rope about 7 feet high between posts or hurdles (3 min).
- Serve underhand from the back line. The receiving player gets two touches: a self-pass (set or bump) and a send over.
- Score a point if the ball lands in the opponent's court, if they use more than two touches, or if they hit it out. Games to 7.
- After each game, the winner moves up a court and the loser moves down; the top and bottom courts stay put. Play 4 or 5 games (12 min).
- Wrap-up (1 min): each student shares which court they ended on and which shot won them the most points.
Rules
- Each player calls their own side out loud: in or out.
- The self-pass must go above your head; no holding the ball.
- Do not step on or go under the rope to get a ball during a point.
Variations
Easier
Allow a catch and an overhead toss with setting form as the second touch.
Standard
Two required touches, self-pass and send, on 10 x 20 foot courts.
Harder
Every send must be a set, and points landing in the corners count double.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a smaller court on their side and one bounce allowed before the self-pass.
- Autism or shyness: keep the same opponent for several games instead of changing courts.
- Advanced students: 13 x 26 foot court and a required jump on the send.
Learning goals
- Control the first touch with a useful self-pass.
- Send the ball to open space in the opponent's court.
- Call close points honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 13
- long rope: 3
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
If you have no posts, tie the rope between stacked chairs or tall hurdles. Circulate and remind students that a high self-pass buys time to set up the send.
