School Torball with a Bell Rope
A sport for blind athletes similar to goalball: the bell ball must roll under a rope strung with bells. Everyone plays blindfolded, practicing orientation by sound, safe defending and the silence rules.
How to play
- Set up 2 courts about 40 × 20 ft. Across the middle, a rope 16 in high tied to poles held by cones, with a bell every 3 ft. At each end, 3 mats mark positions; the goal spans the full width (4 min).
- Make 8 teams of 3: on each court 2 teams play blindfolded and 2 referee and retrieve; the extra student keeps time (2 min).
- Players orient by touching their mat. To attack, roll the ball one-handed under the rope without touching it.
- To defend, lie on your side with arms and legs extended; after a stop, the team has 8 seconds to throw.
- Crossing the end line scores 1 point; if the bells ring, the other team scores. Play 4-minute games, then the referees come in (4 rounds, 16 min).
Rules
- Total silence on and off the court while the ball is live.
- Nobody removes or lifts their blindfold until the referee says so.
- Defend by lying on your side with arms in front of your face; no diving forward headfirst.
Variations
Easier
No rope, and only defenders wear blindfolds.
Standard
Three-on-three, blindfolded, with a bell rope and 4-minute games.
Harder
Nobody throws twice in a row, and attack time drops to 5 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated on the center mat and guards a narrower zone.
- Visual impairment: blindfolded like everyone, the student can explain how they orient by sound.
- Anxiety: an uneasy student starts as referee, then plays with eyes closed.
Learning goals
- Orient using touch and sound cues.
- Use safe rolling throws and lying-down defense.
- Respect the silence rules of blind sport.

Teacher tip
Without a bell ball, wrap a foam ball in a bag with jingle bells. Stress side-lying defense: the typical mistake is diving forward.
