Run-and-Throw Biathlon with Penalty Loops
A team relay inspired by the biathlon: each runner does a lap of the course, throws three foam javelins at a target zone and runs a short penalty loop for every miss. Students work on endurance, throwing accuracy while tired and pacing their effort.
How to play
- Mark a 150 m course with cones, a throwing line with 5 stations 3 m apart and a 3 x 3 m target zone 10 m out from each station; next to it, mark a 30 m penalty loop (3 min).
- 5 teams of 5 in pinnies; each team has a throwing station with 3 foam javelins and a retriever who changes with each leg (2 min).
- Start: the first runner from each team does a lap, reaches the team station, throws the 3 javelins and counts how many land in the zone (3 min).
- For every javelin outside the zone, the runner does one penalty loop, then high-fives the next runner, who takes off. The retriever brings the javelins back to the station (8 min).
- Second race: teams change the order and decide whether to run slower to throw better (5 min).
- Wrap-up: each team discusses whether running fast or throwing calmly paid off more (1 min).
Rules
- Throw only from the line, and never while a retriever is in the landing area.
- The retriever enters the zone only after their runner has thrown all three javelins.
- Penalty loops are always completed, and the team counts them out loud.
- Pass other runners on the outside of the course.
Variations
Easier
Move the target zone to 7 m and make it 4 x 4 m.
Standard
A 150 m course, a 3 x 3 m zone at 10 m and a 30 m penalty loop.
Harder
Alternate javelin throws with medicine ball throws and move the zone back to 12 m.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair covers a shorter course and throws seated at a zone 6 m away.
- Visual impairment: a partner claps from the center of the zone, and the student runs the course with a guide.
- Lower fitness: the student may power walk the penalty loops.
Learning goals
- Stay accurate when throwing with an elevated heart rate.
- Pace their effort to balance speed and accuracy.
- Work with the team to organize the running order and jobs.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 40
- foam javelins: 15
- pinnies: 25
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Place the penalty loop where you can see it to make sure loops are completed. The first legs usually miss a lot because runners arrive out of breath, so use that to talk about pacing.
