No-Dribble Team Handball 5-on-5
Two games of five-on-five plus goalies run side by side, and nobody may dribble, so the ball only moves by passing and cutting. Students work on team play, spacing, and catching on the move.
How to play
- Set up two cross-court fields about 20 x 15 yards with small goals and a 5-yard goal area marked with cones. Four teams of six (five court players and a goalie); the extra student referees and rotates in.
- Basic rules: three steps and 3 seconds of holding are allowed, but dribbling is not. Restart from the goalie after a goal.
- Games last 4 minutes. At the whistle, the goalie moves to the court and a new player goes in goal.
- Bonus: a goal scored after catching on the run inside the 9-meter zone counts 2.
- After two games, teams switch opponents. Wrap up with 1 minute of reflection: which cut produced the most goals?
Rules
- Dribbling is a turnover: the other team throws in from that spot.
- No ripping the ball out of an opponent's hands.
- Safety: defenders stay out of the goal area and never charge into a player in the air.
Variations
Easier
Allow 5 seconds of possession and widen the field.
Standard
No-dribble 5-on-5 with three steps, 3 seconds, and double points on the run.
Harder
A goal only counts if at least four different players touched the ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays in a protected 2-yard sideline zone where no one may guard them.
- Hearing impairment: the referee raises a pinnie to signal a foul or the end of a game.
- Fitness level: balance the teams and rotate often between goalie and court.
Learning goals
- Move the ball upcourt using only passes and cuts.
- Find open space to give a passing lane.
- Follow the step and time rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 3
- pinnies: 12
- small goals: 4
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
At first everyone chases the ball; ask for one player always wide on each sideline. Taking away the dribble speeds up team play a lot in groups that overuse it.
