Korfball Running-In Shot
A progression for the korfball running-in shot, taken by catching a pass on the move and jumping next to the post toward the basket. Students work on the approach run, catching on the move, and timing with the passer.
How to play
- Four posts with groups of 6: two passers 4 m from the basket, one on each side, and a line of shooters 7 m out (2 min).
- No pass (3 min): the shooter walks in with the ball, takes two steps, and jumps off one foot to shoot up in front of the post.
- Off a pass (5 min): the shooter runs in, catches 2 m from the basket, and shoots in the same motion, then rebounds and takes the passer's spot. Switch sides every minute.
- Challenge (6 min): three 2-minute rounds adding up baskets; only shots caught on the run, without stopping, count.
- Wrap-up (4 min): 2-on-1 at each post with at least one running-in shot per possession.
Rules
- No dribbling or running with the ball.
- No hanging on the post or basket.
- Safety: the next shooter waits behind the cone until the rebound is collected.
- In the 2-on-1, the defender doesn't touch the shooter.
Variations
Easier
Hand-off pass 1 m from the post, and hitting the rim counts.
Standard
Pass at 2 m and shoot in the same motion.
Harder
A passive defender steps out from the post and the pass must bounce.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shoots from a standing position 1.5 m out after a pass, and baskets count double.
- Low vision: the passer says “now” before passing and taps the post for direction.
- Lower skill level: starts the run 4 m out to catch at a lower speed.
Learning goals
- Coordinate the approach run with catching on the move.
- Shoot next to the post with a balanced takeoff.
- Time the pass to the shooter.
Equipment for a class of 25
- korfball posts: 4
- balls: 8
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Many students stop before shooting: mark the catch point with a cone and ask for the shot on the very next step. Lower the basket to about 3 m if it's too high.
