Hot Box Ultimate
A disc game where two teams pass around a square but can only score by catching the disc inside a 4 x 4 m box in the middle. Students work on getting open, throwing into space, and defending an area both teams share.
How to play
- Mark three 20 x 20 m squares with a 4 x 4 m box in the center and make six teams of 4 in pinnies, two per square (2 min).
- The catcher stops, pivots, and has ten seconds to throw, counted out loud by the marker.
- After three passes in a row, a teammate may cut into the box: a catch there scores a point and the team keeps the disc, but must throw it out of the box and complete three more passes.
- If the disc hits the ground, goes out, or is intercepted, possession changes on the spot. Games last 5 minutes.
- Play three games, rotating opponents, with 1 minute between games to decide who attacks the box and who supports outside (18 min).
Rules
- No one stays inside the box for more than three seconds.
- No running with the disc; mark from one arm's length without touching.
- Safety: only one player per team jumps inside the box; if a collision looks likely, back off.
- Players call their own fouls and talk them out.
Variations
Easier
A 6 x 6 m box and only two passes first.
Standard
A 4 x 4 m box, three passes first, and a ten count.
Harder
Two small boxes in opposite corners, and points count only off a backhand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: stationary thrower on one side with a fifteen count and no marker.
- Low vision or shyness: a bright disc and a fixed partner who calls out before throwing.
- Lower fitness: subs every 2 minutes or a 15 x 15 m square.
Learning goals
- Get open into a tight space on time.
- Throw accurately to a moving teammate.
- Defend a shared area as a team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flying discs: 3
- cones: 24
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
At first everyone crowds the box: ask two players to stay wide on the sides. Watch for jumping inside the box.
