Guide Running with a Tether
In pairs, a blindfolded athlete and a guide run linked by a tether, as in Paralympic track for blind runners. Students progress from walking to running straights and curves, building timing, communication and trust.
How to play
- Each pair makes a tether from a jump rope folded into a 20-in loop. Rules: the guide never pulls or pushes, and the athlete finishes first (3 min).
- Walking: blindfolded athlete with the guide alongside, tether in the inside hands, arms swinging together. A 45-yard course with cues (“cone in 3, 2, 1,” “left,” “stop”) (4 min, switch halfway).
- Easy jog on a 65-yard straightaway with two cone lanes; the guide runs outside and sets the pace (4 min, switch roles).
- Curves: an oval with 2 wide turns the guide calls 5 steps ahead (4 min, switch roles).
- 65-yard heats with 4 pairs each: the most in-sync pair wins, and the athlete must finish first (6 min).
Rules
- The guide never lets go of the tether or pulls the partner; at any hazard they call “stop” and both halt.
- The blindfolded athlete sets the pace and asks to go faster or slower.
- Each pair uses a lane at least 6 ft wide, and nobody crosses lanes during a heat.
Variations
Easier
Walk only, with the athlete holding the guide's elbow.
Standard
Jogging and 65-yard heats on a tether, blindfolded, athlete finishing first.
Harder
A 4 × 65-yard relay with baton passes between athletes guided by voice.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: from their wheelchair, the student guides a blindfolded walking partner on flat stretches.
- Visual impairment: students with low vision share the help they prefer and run with a guide.
- Fitness level: each pair chooses walking, jogging or running.
Learning goals
- Coordinate running rhythm with a partner using tether and voice.
- Give clear, early cues that build trust.
- Learn the rules of Paralympic guided running.

Teacher tip
Don't move to jogging until every pair stops cleanly on the signal. If a student feels anxious blindfolded, let them close their eyes instead.
