Discathon: Run-and-Throw Disc Race
A flying disc race around a course with required gates, where players advance by throwing the disc and running to where it lands, never running with it in hand. Students work on endurance, throwing accuracy, and pacing.
How to play
- Set up a course of about 200 m with five 3 m gates made of two poles each and a finish hoop on the ground; a colored cone shows which side of each gate the disc must pass (4 min).
- Each student has a disc and starts 15 seconds after the previous runner; the teacher keeps time.
- Throw, run to where the disc landed, and throw again from that spot. If the disc misses a gate on the correct side, rethrow from where it was thrown.
- The race ends when the disc lands inside the finish hoop; record times for two laps (10 min).
- In pairs (6 min): one disc and alternating throws; each pair tries to beat the sum of its individual times.
Rules
- No running with the disc: throw from the exact spot where you picked it up.
- Safety: before throwing, check that no one is in front and call “disc!”
- Pass other runners to the side without crossing their throwing line.
- If the disc lands in an off-limits area, rethrow from the last gate.
Variations
Easier
A 120 m course with three 5 m gates.
Standard
A 200 m course, five gates, and a required side.
Harder
Each gate requires a specific throw, backhand or forehand, and the disc must stay inside the hoop.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a short, flat course, throwing from a chair with a partner retrieving the disc.
- Low vision: brightly colored cones at the gates and a partner who guides by voice.
- Lower fitness: may walk briskly between throws and races against personal best.
Learning goals
- Keep a steady running pace between throws.
- Throw accurately toward gates and targets.
- Manage effort by comparing times to a personal best.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flying discs: 25
- cones: 12
- Poles: 10
- hoops: 1
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Design the course with no crossing paths so no one throws toward another group. With starts every 15 seconds, the whole class is moving within a few minutes without bottlenecks.
