Zigzag 1-on-1 Lane Dribbling
A 1-on-1 battle in a narrow lane down the court: the offensive player dribbles in a zigzag, switching hands, while the defender slides to cut them off. It works on protected dribbling and on-ball individual defense.
How to play
- Mark lanes about 5 yards wide with cones from the baseline to half court. Pairs share a ball, two or three pairs per lane (2 min).
- Phase 1: the defender, hands behind the back, slides without crossing the feet; the dribbler switches hands at each side of the lane. Down, back, switch (3 min).
- Phase 2: the defender uses arms to steer, without touching the ball, trying to force 4 hand changes before half court (3 min).
- Phase 3, live: crossing half court earns the dribbler 1 point; a steal or pushing them out of the lane earns the defender 1 point (5 min).
- Switch roles every trip and partners halfway through. Quick debrief on the best defensive stance (2 min).
Rules
- Defenders don't cross their feet when sliding and stay an arm's length away.
- Steals must be clean: touch the ball only, never the arm or body.
- Safety: the next pair starts when the pair ahead passes the free-throw line.
Variations
Easier
The defender stays passive and the lane widens to 7 yards.
Standard
Three phases of increasing defense in a 5-yard lane.
Harder
Go full court, and the dribbler may only use the weak hand in the second half.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: use a shorter lane, and the defender only blocks the path without trying to steal.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: signal phase changes with a card or arm signal in addition to the whistle.
- Pair students of similar ability; students with lower fitness go half the distance and recover during the switch.
Learning goals
- Protect the ball while dribbling with changes of direction and hand.
- Keep a low defensive stance using lateral slides.
- Follow contact rules in a 1-on-1 contest.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketball: 13
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Tell defenders to watch the dribbler's hips, not the ball, so they don't get faked out. This is demanding: alternate trips with active rest and don't go past 15 minutes.
