Warp Speed Group Ball Pass
The group creates a passing pattern in which everyone touches the ball once, then tries to repeat it faster and faster. Cutting the time forces students to rethink how they are organized, building creativity, decision-making and cooperation.
How to play
- Make 2 circles of 12 or 13 students about 6 feet apart, with one foam ball per circle (1 min).
- Pattern: the starter calls a name and tosses; that student does the same with someone who hasn't touched it, until it returns to the start. Repeat twice to memorize it (3 min).
- First official timed run; it usually takes 20 to 40 seconds (2 min).
- Challenge: get under 10 seconds. Only two fixed rules: same touch order, and the ball starts and ends with the same person.
- Cycles of 1 minute of planning plus a timed attempt, up to 4 times, recording the group's best (8 min).
- Each group shows its best solution to the other and names who came up with the ideas (1 min).
Rules
- Everyone touches the ball in the original order.
- If the ball hits the floor, the attempt is redone.
- Students may change places, but no one leaves the pattern.
- Safety: no running or pushing while regrouping.
Variations
Easier
Groups of 8 aiming for under 15 seconds.
Standard
Circles of 12 or 13 aiming for under 10 seconds.
Harder
A second ball with a different pattern must be completed at the same time.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group positions itself so the student receives and hands off at hand height without moving.
- Hearing impairment: use a visual start signal and a raised hand on each catch.
- Shyness: saying the name quietly is enough; talking turns are shared with an object.
Learning goals
- Generate and test creative movement solutions as a group.
- Coordinate the group to improve a shared record.
- Recognize each teammate's contribution.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 2
- stopwatch: 2
Teacher tip
Don't suggest solutions; just restate the rules when students ask "Can we...?" Make sure quieter students get heard, since they often have the best ideas.
