Viral Dance Remix: Learn It, Then Flip 8 Counts
Students learn a short 32-count routine in the style of a viral social media dance to a current song, and then each group swaps one 8-count block for its own moves to create a remix. Students build rhythm, movement memory and creativity.
How to play
- Set students in staggered rows facing you and teach the first 8-count block, first without music and counting out loud (4 min).
- Teach blocks 2, 3 and 4 the same way, adding each new block to the ones before (8 min).
- Dance the full routine to music twice, first at half speed and then at full speed (3 min).
- Form groups of 4-5: each group replaces one of the four blocks with 8 counts they create themselves (5 min).
- Groups show their remix two at a time, and the class tries to learn the new block from the group that just performed (5 min).
Rules
- Always count 1 to 8 out loud when learning a new block.
- New moves must be safe: no jumping off anything and no floor spins without a mat.
- The whole group takes part in the new block.
- Respect other people's music taste and ideas.
Variations
Easier
Learn only 16 counts and let each group change 4 counts instead of 8.
Standard
Learn all 32 counts and remix one 8-count block per group.
Harder
Each group changes two blocks and adds a formation change or a new facing during the routine.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: turn footwork into arm, head and torso moves, and let the student design the group's arm block.
- Hearing impairment: show the counts on your fingers and write the numbers 1 to 8 on a whiteboard as a visual cue.
- Coordination level: offer a simplified version of each block using slower double-time steps.
Learning goals
- Match movements to a song's tempo by counting 8-count phrases.
- Memorize a 32-count sequence.
- Create a new choreography block as a group and teach it to others.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- speakers: 1
Teacher tip
Let students suggest songs the class before and screen the lyrics first. Teach mirrored, and turn your back to the class for blocks that change sides.
