Uphill and Downhill Hiking Technique
A station circuit that teaches students to walk like on a mountain trail: zigzagging uphill, going downhill with bent knees, using the rest step on stairs, and stepping over uneven ground with a backpack. Students work on hiking technique and injury prevention.
How to play
- Set up 4 stations using slopes, bleachers, or stairs on campus, marked with cones. Form 4 groups of 6 with one light backpack (5-6 lb) per pair (2 min).
- Station 1, zigzag climb: students go up a slope weaving between cones, taking short steps with the whole foot down, and walk back down along the side (4 min).
- Station 2, downhill: students go down with knees slightly bent, weight a little forward, and short steps, without running; the partner checks they aren't braking on their heels (4 min).
- Station 3, rest step: students climb stairs or bleachers, briefly locking the back knee on each step and breathing in rhythm with their steps (4 min).
- Station 4, uneven ground: students walk over folded, uneven mats, looking two steps ahead with the backpack properly adjusted (4 min).
- Rotate on the whistle. To finish, the whole group walks a short route that links all four techniques and shares which was hardest (4 min).
Rules
- No running on any downhill and no jumping off steps.
- Wear the backpack with both straps and the chest strap fastened.
- Safety: use the handrail on the bleachers if there is one, and only one group goes up at a time.
Variations
Easier
Do the stations without a backpack on very gentle slopes.
Standard
Four 4-minute stations with a light backpack shared by each pair.
Harder
Each student carries their own backpack with 7-9 lb, and the final route is timed at a steady pace.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: practice going up and down ramps with controlled pushing and braking.
- Visual impairments: walk with a guide who calls out each change in slope.
- Lower fitness: no backpack; stronger students do two climbs per turn.
Learning goals
- Use proper walking technique on uphills and downhills.
- Prevent knee and ankle injuries while hiking.
- Adjust and carry a backpack correctly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- backpacks: 12
- cones: 16
- mats: 6
Teacher tip
The most common downhill error is leaning back and digging in the heels; demonstrate it in an exaggerated way. Check the condition of the slope before class.
