Ultimate Pull and Pressure Defense Game
Students practice the Ultimate pull, a long, high throw from their own end zone, followed by a coordinated defensive sprint to pressure the offense before it gets set. The focus is throwing power and team defense.
How to play
- Set up a 50 x 25 m (55 x 27 yd) field with 8 m end zones and make teams of 5, each on its goal line (2 min).
- Technique in partners 25-30 m apart: backhand with a long arm, disc high and tilted slightly outward; 8 throws each, all in the same direction (6 min).
- Pull and run: one team pulls and sprints once the disc is airborne; each defender picks a receiver and must be on them before the first pass (4 min).
- Play 5-on-5: every point starts with a pull; if it goes out the side, the offense starts at midfield (10 min).
- If the defense gets a turnover before the offense completes 4 passes, it earns 1 bonus point; finish by discussing which pulls bought the most time (2 min).
Rules
- No defender crosses the goal line before the disc is released.
- The pull may be caught or allowed to land, without knocking anyone down.
- Eyes up during the sprint; a late defender never dives.
- Students waiting their turn stand behind the thrower, never beside them.
Variations
Easier
Pull from 10 m in front of the goal line, and the bonus applies before 3 passes.
Standard
Pull from the goal line with a bonus point for a turnover before 4 passes.
Harder
The pull must land in the last 15 m of the field and the defense sets up a zone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: take every pull for the team and defend a fixed nearby zone.
- Visual impairment: use a high-contrast disc and call out 'Disc!' on the release.
- Fitness level: students who can't sustain the sprint play deep as the last defender.
Learning goals
- Execute a long backhand with a high flight path.
- Coordinate the defensive sprint to mark opponents before they set up.
- Recognize hang time as a tactical advantage.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Flying discs: 13
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
Many students pull flat and short; cue them to tilt the disc up and finish with a long arm. Space partners widely so discs don't cross.
