1v1 Ball Volley Matches
1v1 ball volley: singles games on a small court with a low net, hitting the ball over the net and allowing one bounce. Students work on striking, court positioning and quick decision-making.
How to play
- Setup (3 min): 4x8 m courts split by a net or rope 1–1.5 m high, one court per pair.
- Warm-up rally (5 min): in pairs without keeping score, hit with hands or forearms over the net after one bounce; count consecutive hits.
- Game rules (2 min): one bounce allowed before hitting, one contact per player, and an underhand serve from the back line.
- Games (16 min): to 7 points; you win the point if the ball bounces twice on your opponent's side or they hit it out or into the net.
- Rotation: after each game, the winner moves up a court and the other player moves down, so everyone plays several opponents.
- Wrap-up (4 min): discuss which areas of the court were hardest to defend.
Rules
- No one touches the net or crosses to the other side.
- Fair play: each player calls their own faults.
- At least 2 m between courts to avoid collisions.
- Only one contact per player before sending the ball over.
Variations
Easier
Two bounces and hitting with hands, on a smaller court.
Standard
One bounce and one contact per player.
Harder
No bounce: the ball must be volleyed directly.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: smaller court, two bounces allowed and a lower net.
- Visual impairment: a large, brightly colored ball and a verbal cue before each serve.
- Lower skill level: a soft or light ball and the option to catch and throw.
Learning goals
- Improve striking the ball with hands and forearms.
- Make quick decisions about where to send the ball.
- Practice fair play and self-officiating.
Equipment for a class of 25
- nets or ropes: 6
- balls: 13
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
If you don't have enough nets, tie ropes between standards or chairs. Short games to 7 points keep the rotation moving so everyone plays several opponents.
