Ultimate in the Wind: Downwind, Upwind and Crosswind
Outdoor Ultimate session that turns the wind into the lesson: students first test how each throw flies downwind, upwind and in a crosswind, then play switching ends so each team adjusts its strategy. They learn to read the natural environment and adapt to it.
How to play
- Check the wind with a strip of paper or grass tossed in the air; the group decides which direction is downwind and which is upwind (2 min).
- In pairs, five backhand and five forehand passes in each of the three directions, discussing how the flight changes (8 min).
- Each team agrees on two of its own rules: which throws it will use upwind and which downwind (3 min).
- 6v6 or 7v7 game switching ends every point, as in the official rules (14 min).
- Debrief: which end was harder, and did the team stick to its agreed rules? (3 min).
Rules
- In strong wind, long throws are off limits to avoid discs flying out of control.
- Play is non-contact and self-refereeing calls are respected.
- Discs that leave the field are retrieved at a walk, without crossing other groups' areas.
- With very strong gusts or a storm, move to an activity in the gym.
Variations
Easier
4v4 game on a small field with crosswind only.
Standard
Tests in three directions and a full game switching ends.
Harder
The team attacking upwind can only use passes under 15 m.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays as a fixed handler and analyzes the flight changes with the teacher.
- Hearing impairment: the switch of ends is shown with an arm pointing toward the new end.
- Asthma or pollen allergy: judge the day; the student can track the agreed rules as analyst.
Learning goals
- Analyze how wind affects different throws.
- Adapt team strategy to environmental conditions.
- Respect and make use of the natural environment as a factor in the game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flying discs: 4
- cones: 20
- pinnies: 14
Teacher tip
Save it for a moderately windy day: you cannot set it up any other time. A flagpole or a nearby tree helps show the wind direction.
