Ultimate Dump-and-Swing Reset Game
A 5-on-5 Ultimate game where the offense learns to reset possession when the thrower is marked: a short backward pass to the dump and a quick swing to the other side. Students practice patience, reading the mark, and communication.
How to play
- Set up a 40 x 20 m (45 x 22 yd) field with 6 m end zones and make teams of 5 in pinnies; extra students sub in every point (2 min).
- Demo: the marked thrower, the dump 3-4 m behind on a diagonal, and a third player in the middle waiting for the swing (3 min).
- Trios with no defense: dump it back, pivot, and throw flat to the teammate cutting to the open side; rotate every 4 reps (5 min).
- Play 5-on-5 with a loud stall count to 8; on 'five,' the offense looks for the dump (10 min).
- A goal is 1 point, or 2 if that possession included a dump followed by a swing; finish with each team sharing what worked (2 min).
Rules
- No running with the disc; the thrower keeps a pivot foot.
- The marker counts from one arm's length away without touching disc or thrower.
- Dropped or intercepted disc: turnover from that spot.
- No contact: on a 50-50 disc, pull up before colliding and replay it.
Variations
Easier
Play 5-on-4 and extend the stall count to 10.
Standard
Play 5-on-5 with a count to 8 and double points for using the dump.
Harder
Drop the count to 6 and let a defender guard the dump.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play as a fixed dump inside a coned zone where no one can guard them.
- Shy students or autism: use a fixed visual cue (hand up) to call for the disc and keep the same role in the first game.
- Fitness level: students who need rest sub every point and play the dump, which covers less ground.
Learning goals
- Keep possession with dump passes under pressure.
- Identify the open side and swing the disc there.
- Communicate with clear voice and hand signals during play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Flying discs: 6
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
The common mistake is setting up the dump too far away or directly behind the thrower; stress the diagonal at 3-4 m. On the swing, ask for flat throws, not lobs.
