Ultimate 3-on-2 End Zone Waves
Three attackers try to move a soft disc by passing all the way into an end zone defended by two classmates, in quick waves that run back to back with no waiting. Students learn to use the extra player, pass without running with the disc, and fill open space.
How to play
- Set up two fields of 25 x 15 m (about 80 x 50 ft) with a 5 m end zone at one end. On each field, attackers line up at the starting line with discs and two defenders in pinnies stand in the middle (2 min).
- Three attackers go with one disc and have 20 seconds to score by catching it in the end zone. Ultimate rules: no running with the disc, pivot on one foot, and defenders stay 1 m away.
- A score is 1 point for offense; an interception, a drop, or running out of time is a point for defense.
- Rotate: two of the attackers stay on as the new defenders and the defenders go to the back of the line. Start a new wave about every 30 seconds (7 min).
- Then play 4-on-3 for 6 minutes, with waves of four attackers against three defenders.
- Wrap up with a 2-minute talk: where was the open teammate when you scored?
Rules
- No running with the disc; you get 3 steps to stop after a catch.
- The next wave doesn't start until the previous one is done and off the field.
- Safety: spare discs stay at the cone by the line, never lying on the field.
Variations
Easier
Three attackers against one defender with 30 seconds to score.
Standard
3-on-2 with 20 seconds to score.
Harder
3-on-2 with 12 seconds and a maximum of 4 passes to reach the end zone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair can be the starting thrower for each wave or a receiver in the end zone with no defender within 2 m.
- Autism or shyness: explain the rotation with a drawing and let the student watch two waves before joining.
- Fitness level: a student who needs a rest can be the wave timer for one turn.
Learning goals
- Use the extra attacker by finding the open teammate.
- Throw and catch a disc on the move toward an end zone.
- Follow no-contact ultimate rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft flying discs: 8
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 6
Teacher tip
At first all three attackers bunch up, so ask for one wide on each side and one behind as a reset. Keep a stopwatch handy or count the 20 seconds out loud yourself.
