2v2 Alley Mini-Volleyball
A 2v2 mini-volleyball game on a very long, narrow court, about 33×10 feet, where the only way to win a point is by playing for depth: short near the net or deep to the back. It works on reading the ball's flight, moving forward and back, and splitting zones with a partner.
How to play
- Use cones to mark several 33×10-foot alleys (16 feet per side) under a rope at 6.5 feet; pairs on each side with one ball per alley (3 min).
- One pair serves underhand from the back; play with up to 3 touches per team, and one bounce on the floor is allowed before the first touch.
- Partners split their side into front and back; before each serve, they decide who covers each zone and say it out loud.
- A point is scored if the ball lands inside the other alley; if it goes out the sides or the back, the other team scores.
- Games go to 7 points or 4 min; the winning pair moves up an alley and the losing pair moves down (4 games, 16 min).
- After each game, partners switch zones: the front player moves to the back.
Rules
- Don't step on or touch the rope; each pair plays only in its own alley.
- Leave at least 6 feet between alleys so no one collides while moving sideways.
- When moving back, watch the ball and use short steps; no fast backpedaling.
- Replay any disputed points without arguing.
Variations
Easier
Allow a bounce on any touch and catching the first touch.
Standard
A 33×10-foot alley, up to 3 touches, and one bounce before the first touch.
Harder
No bounces, and the front half of the other alley is marked as a double-point zone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: always plays the front zone, with their side of the alley shortened to 10 feet.
- Visual impairment: uses a brightly colored ball, and the partner calls "Short" or "Deep" as the ball comes over.
- Lower skill level: their pair plays in a 26×10-foot alley with the rope at 6 feet.
Learning goals
- Read whether the ball will land short or deep and move in time.
- Send the ball to the open area of the other court by varying depth.
- Split up court zones with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- lightweight volleyballs: 6
- long ropes: 2
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
Mark alleys clearly with cones or chalk to avoid arguments. If a pair only plays deep, ask them what happens if the other team stays back.
