2v2 Mini-Volleyball with Catch Cards
A 2v2 mini-volleyball game where each pair gets three catch cards per game: each card lets them catch the ball once to save a tough play. It helps students move from catching to continuous play and makes them decide when a card is worth using.
How to play
- Courts about 20×15 feet with a low net or rope at 6.5 feet; each pair gets 3 cards and leaves them by their back line (2 min).
- Serve underhand from the back, and each pair gets up to 3 touches; catching is not allowed unless you use a catch card.
- To use a card, a player catches the ball, calls "Card!", tosses it to their partner, who sends it over with a set or a bump; the pair hands one card to the other team.
- A point is scored if the ball lands on the other side; catching without a card gives the other team the point.
- Games go to 11 points or 5 min; the team with more points wins, and ties go to the team with more cards left (3 games, switching opponents, 15 min).
- Finish (3 min): each pair counts how many cards they used per game and whether it was fewer in the last one.
Rules
- Only one card per rally.
- Don't touch the net or step onto the other side.
- Pairs call out the score after every rally.
- Call for the ball before going for it so you don't run into your partner.
Variations
Easier
Each pair gets 6 cards, and the serve may be caught without using one.
Standard
Three cards per game, up to 3 touches, and ties broken by cards left.
Harder
Only one card per game, and 2 touches are required before sending the ball over.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays with the net at 5 feet on their side, and their pair gets 2 extra cards.
- Autism: cards are always the same color, and the rule is shown with a demonstration before playing.
- Highly skilled students: their pair starts with no cards and earns one for every 3 points in a row.
Learning goals
- Keep the ball in play with sets and bumps.
- Decide when it's worth using a catch card.
- Handle the frustration of losing points and encourage a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- lightweight volleyballs: 6
- low nets: 3
- cards: 36
Teacher tip
Pairs often burn their cards on the first points, so talk strategy between games. Over time, cut down the cards to move toward real mini-volleyball.
