Two in One Hand: Fountain and Columns
Students learn two classic two-ball juggling patterns in one hand: the fountain, with tosses that circle outward, and columns, with balls rising and falling in straight lines. Students work on throwing accuracy, using both hands, and persistence.
How to play
- In pairs, two balls per student. Base toss: one ball in the dominant hand rises to eye level, makes a small outward circle, and lands in the same hand; 20 reps with each hand (3 min).
- Two-ball fountain: toss the first ball and, when it peaks, toss the second; catch them in the same order. The partner counts catches in a row (6 min).
- Switch hands: repeat the fountain with the non-dominant hand, which is usually twice as hard (4 min).
- Columns: both balls go straight up and down in the same hand, one on the outside and one on the inside (4 min).
- Partner challenge: each student sets a fountain record with each hand and writes it down; the winner is whoever improves the most from their first try (3 min).
Rules
- Always toss to eye level without looking at your hand.
- If a ball drops, pick it up only when your partner is not juggling nearby.
- Each pair stays 6 feet from other pairs.
- Count out loud and honestly.
Variations
Easier
Practice with one scarf and one ball, or kneeling close to the floor so drops are easier to collect.
Standard
Fountain and columns with two balls, one hand at a time.
Harder
Try the fountain with two balls in each hand at the same time, synchronized or alternating.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student works seated with a table in front so balls do not roll away.
- Visual impairment: use larger balls in high-contrast colors or balls with bells.
- Skill level: students who progress quickly move on to the non-dominant hand; others repeat the base toss.
Learning goals
- Toss accurately to a consistent height.
- Build skill in the non-dominant hand.
- Set personal goals and measure their own improvement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling balls: 50
Teacher tip
If tosses drift forward, have students practice facing a wall. Keep talk short and reps high: juggling improves through attempts.
