Two-Grid Transition Rondo 4v2
Two side-by-side grids: one team keeps the ball 4v2 while two opponents press; if the pressers win it, they pass to their own grid and the press switches sides. Students practice possession, coordinated pressure, and quick reactions after a turnover.
How to play
- Set up two 12 x 12 yd grids that share a side. Groups of 8: four blue in grid A and four red in grid B (with 25 students, run three setups plus one neutral who plays with the team in possession).
- Two reds enter grid A to press while the blues pass to keep the ball away from them (4v2).
- If the reds win it, they pass to a teammate in grid B and sprint back; now two blues enter grid B to press.
- Scoring: 8 passes in a row earns 1 point for the team in possession; winning the ball and connecting with the other grid earns 1 point for the pressers.
- Play three 5-minute rounds with 1 minute of rest, changing the pressing pair; use the last 2 minutes to discuss when to press together.
Rules
- Passes stay on the ground; if the ball goes out, the other team restarts with a kick-in.
- Only two players press at a time; everyone else waits in their own grid.
- No slide tackles and no tackling from behind: stay on your feet and challenge from the front or side.
Variations
Easier
Play 4v1 in 14 x 14 yd grids, with 6 passes for a point.
Standard
Play 4v2 with 8 passes for a point and a transition into the other grid after a steal.
Harder
Two-touch limit, and a steal only scores if it reaches the other grid within 5 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays as a fixed neutral in one corner and cannot be pressed.
- Autism or shyness: preview the pressing order on a card and keep the same group all class.
- Lower fitness: use a bigger grid and limit each press to 30 seconds.
Learning goals
- Keep possession by offering passing lanes when your team has the numbers.
- Press as a pair by shutting down the pass through the middle.
- Switch roles quickly after winning or losing the ball.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 6
- cones: 18
- pinnies (two colors): 24
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is attackers standing still in the corners, so insist on two passing options at all times. Leave about 4 yards between setups so loose balls do not roll into another grid.
