Two-Disc Ultimate
A 6-on-6 ultimate game with two soft discs in play at the same time: each team starts with one and can score with either. It gives every student more chances to throw and catch and forces them to track two plays at once.
How to play
- Set up two fields of 35 x 20 m (about 115 x 65 ft) with 5 m end zones at each end. Make 4 teams of 6 in pinnies (the 25th student is a sub), two per field; each team starts with a disc in its own end zone (2 min).
- Review the rules (2 min): no running with the disc, the marker counts to 8 from 1 m away with no contact, and a drop or interception turns that disc over.
- On the whistle, both teams attack at the same time with their disc toward the opposite end zone, so each team is on offense and defense at once.
- Catching a disc in the opponent's end zone is worth 1 point. The team that gave up the score puts that disc back in play from that end zone while the other disc stays live.
- If a team ends up with both discs, it can attack with both. Each team names a lookout who calls out where the other disc is.
- Play two 7-minute halves with a 1-minute break, switching opponents for the second half.
Rules
- Only one defender may mark each thrower.
- Players call their own fouls, and the play is redone if there's a disagreement.
- Safety: look around before throwing, because another disc may be in the air.
Variations
Easier
Use a smaller field, 5-on-5, and a count to 10.
Standard
6-on-6 with two discs at once.
Harder
Every score in the last 2 minutes counts double, and the stall count drops to 6 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair can score by catching in a marked zone along the end line and gets a 10-second count.
- Visual impairment: use discs in very different colors and have a partner call out which disc is coming.
- Fitness level: sub in the extra player every 3 minutes so nobody plays a whole half without rest.
Learning goals
- Track two plays at once and decide where to help.
- Throw and catch a disc more often in real game situations.
- Communicate as a team to coordinate offense and defense at the same time.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft flying discs: 6
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
Use two discs in very different colors so nobody gets confused. At first everyone chases the same disc, so freeze play and ask where the other one is.
