Two-Ball Soccer
A 6v6 game with two balls of different colors in play at once, so teams must attack and defend on two fronts at the same time. Students practice divided attention, team organization, and full participation, with far more touches on the ball.
How to play
- Four teams of 6 in pinnies on two 35 x 25 yd fields with two small goals at each end. The extra student keeps score and feeds balls back in.
- Play 6v6 with no goalkeepers and two balls at once: a soccer ball and a different-colored foam ball, starting one in each half.
- Each goal is worth 1 point and play never stops: the team that was scored on restarts that ball from its own end line.
- If a team scores with both balls within 10 seconds, it earns 2 bonus points.
- Play three 5-minute periods with 1 minute of rest and switch opponents; take 2 final minutes to discuss how teams organized themselves.
Rules
- No player may touch both balls at the same time.
- Look before you run: never cross the field with your head down.
- No slide tackles or charging; if a ball hits someone in the face, stop everything and restart after checking they are okay.
Variations
Easier
Both balls are foam, and games are 5v5 on a bigger field.
Standard
Two different-colored balls at once, with a bonus for scoring with both within 10 seconds.
Harder
The foam ball may only be played with the weaker foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays only the foam ball in a protected zone on their side.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: start with one ball and add the second when the student is comfortable.
- Lower fitness: the student alternates periods with the scorekeeper.
Learning goals
- Pay attention to two areas of play at once.
- Organize the team to attack and defend at the same time.
- Get involved with more touches on the ball.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 4
- foam balls: 4
- small goals: 8
- pinnies (four colors): 24
Teacher tip
At first everyone chases the same ball, so freeze play and ask each team to split into two groups of three. The game is very active and loud, so agree on a clear stop signal ahead of time.
