Triple Frog Jump Scoring Zones
The frog jump from kids' track and field: from a standing start, students link three two-footed jumps in a row and score the zone where the last one lands. They build leg power, coordinate arms and legs, and practice balanced landings.
How to play
- Chalk 5 lanes with a start line and, beginning at 3 m, 50 cm zones numbered 1 to 8; measure them with the measuring tape (3 min, can be set up before class).
- Make 5 groups of 5, one per lane, and demonstrate: crouch with arms back, swing the arms forward and land on both feet together (2 min).
- Practice round: one single jump, then two linked jumps; students waiting watch whether the jumper lands without losing balance (3 min).
- Competition: each student gets 2 tries of three jumps in a row; a partner places a cone at the back heel and the zone is recorded (4 min).
- Add each member's best zone and compare totals with the other lanes (1 min).
- Final challenge: each group tries to beat its total with one last try each, using the tip that helped most (2 min).
Rules
- All three jumps are done without pausing, always with feet together.
- Only one jumper per lane at a time; the next one waits behind the start.
- Jump in athletic shoes on dry ground with no gravel.
Variations
Easier
Link two jumps instead of three and start the zones at 2 meters.
Standard
Three linked standing frog jumps, scoring the zone of the last landing.
Harder
Link five jumps, and the last one must be stuck for two seconds or it loses one zone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student tosses a beanbag from the start line into the same zones, and the score counts for the group.
- Hard of hearing: teach the movement by demonstration and a card showing the three phases.
- Lower fitness: allow a small adjustment step between jumps with no score penalty.
Learning goals
- Coordinate the arm swing and leg drive in a two-footed jump.
- Link jumps together without losing balance.
- Watch a partner and give them a useful tip.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 5
- cones: 10
- measuring tape: 1
Teacher tip
On hard surfaces, move the activity to grass or line up thin mats. The most common mistake is not using the arms; tell students to "throw" their hands toward the zone they want to reach.
