Traffic Light Invasion Game: Keep, Advance, Score

A small-sided team handball game in which the teacher raises a red, yellow, or green cone, and each color changes what scores: keeping the ball, advancing it, or finishing. Students learn to recognize the phases of attack and adjust team decisions to the goal of the moment.

How to play

  1. Set up two 90 x 50 ft cross-court fields with small goals, a midline, and a 16 ft zone in front of each goal. Make 4 teams of 6 or 7; play 5 on 5 (3 min).
  2. Red, keep it: every 5 passes in a row earns 1 point, and goals do not count.
  3. Yellow, advance it: catching a pass inside the other team's 16 ft zone earns 1 point.
  4. Green, finish it: a goal is worth 2 points, or 3 from outside the zone.
  5. Raise a colored cone and call it out loud; change it every 60 to 90 seconds without warning. Play 2 halves of 6 minutes and switch opponents (13 min).
  6. Wrap-up for 2 minutes: which color was hardest? What changed in where you stood?

Teacher tip

At first, students keep going for goal on red; stop the game and ask which color is up. Once they have it down, let a student be the one who changes the colors.
