Traffic Jam Hoop Puzzle
A cooperative logic challenge: two halves of a group face each other in a line of hoops and must swap places by following strict movement rules. Students practice planning, communication and listening.
How to play
- Make 3 groups of 8 (one extra student observes). Each group lays 9 hoops in a line: 4 students on the left facing right, 4 on the right facing left, and the center hoop empty (2 min).
- Legal moves: step forward into an empty hoop, or move around one person facing you into the empty hoop behind them. Never move backward or pass someone facing your way (2 min).
- First free attempt of 4 minutes; if they get stuck, they reset to the start.
- Two-minute planning break off the hoops to find where the jam happens.
- Second 3-minute attempt in which only one leader talks; others move when called by name.
- Two-minute debrief: groups that solve it count their moves (the minimum is 24) and explain their pattern.
Rules
- Only one person moves at a time, and each hoop holds one person.
- An illegal move means a reset.
- Every idea gets heard; no one moves a teammate by pushing.
- Safety: step into the center of the hoop, no sudden jumps, to avoid slipping.
Variations
Easier
Three per side, 7 hoops, and the whole group may talk.
Standard
Four per side, 9 hoops and a planning break.
Harder
Total silence, or 5 per side and 11 hoops.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student leads as strategist or moves with hoops spaced wider for a mobility aid.
- Visual impairment: mark each hoop with a beanbag and have a partner describe each move.
- Advanced level: the group writes down the sequence and teaches another group without doing it for them.
Learning goals
- Plan a group solution to a movement problem.
- Share ideas clearly and take turns.
- Treat mistakes as part of group learning.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 27
Teacher tip
Don't give the answer; ask which pattern causes the jam. If frustration builds, reduce the number per side and add people back once they solve it.
