Three-Team Kin-Ball Match with Student Officials
A Kin-Ball match with three teams of four on the court, short periods, and resting teams that officiate and keep score. Students work on cooperation and opposition, the basic serve and catch rules, and responsibility as officials.
How to play
- Make 6 teams of 4 in pinnies of three colors (one sub); three teams play on a 20 x 20 m court while the other three officiate and keep score (2 min).
- Review: the serving team yells 'Omnikin' plus the color of the team that must catch; all four touch the ball, which travels at least 1.8 m (6 ft) and not downward (3 min).
- 6-minute period: if the called team fails to catch before the ball hits the floor, the other two teams score 1 point each and the team that missed serves.
- Faults (short or downward serve, wrong color, not all four touching): 1 point to each of the other two teams; the official raises an arm.
- Players and officials swap after each period; play 3 periods (18 min) and finish with officials explaining the most common fault (2 min).
Rules
- On the serve, three players hold the ball and the fourth strikes it; everyone touches it.
- After a catch, the team has 10 seconds to serve again.
- No pushing or diving head-first to reach the ball.
- Officials' calls stand; questions wait until the end of the period.
Variations
Easier
Drop the minimum serve distance to 1 m and allow one bounce before the catch.
Standard
Three teams of four, 6-minute periods, and faults that score for opponents.
Harder
The first-place team cannot be called, and the time to serve drops to 5 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hold the ball on the serve from their position and act as head official while resting.
- Hearing impairment: officials show which team was called with a colored pinnie or card.
- Fitness level: free subs with the extra player on every serve.
Learning goals
- Apply the basic rules of Kin-Ball in a three-team match.
- Cooperate with teammates against two opponents at once.
- Take on the official and scorekeeper roles responsibly.

Teacher tip
At first teams forget to call the color or call it late; require the call before the strike. Station officials off the court at the corners.
