Three-Step Spike Approach Progression
A beginner spiking progression: first the three-step approach marked with flat disc cones, then the jump with an arm swing, and finally hitting a ball tossed by a partner. Students coordinate footwork, jumping, and contact above the net.
How to play
- Mark three flat disc cones on the left side for the footwork: left foot, right foot, left foot (for right-handers). Demonstrate the 'slow, quick-quick' rhythm (3 min).
- Phase 1 (4 min): three-step approach and jump swinging both arms back and up, no ball, in lines of 4.
- Phase 2 (4 min): holding a ball, jump and throw it over the net with a wrist snap.
- Phase 3 (6 min): a partner tosses high from the middle front, and the hitter jumps and hits with an open hand into the other court.
- Each hitter retrieves their ball around the court and becomes the tosser. Final challenge (3 min): hit to the deep zone marked with cones.
Rules
- Always land on both feet with bent knees, without touching the net.
- Nobody crosses into the other court while someone is hitting.
- Wait until the previous hitter has cleared the approach area before tossing.
Variations
Easier
Hit a tossed ball without jumping, with the net lowered to about 6.5 feet.
Standard
Three-step approach, jump, and hit a ball tossed by a partner.
Harder
The ball comes from a real set off a pass instead of a toss.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hit standing or seated on a ball held by a partner, focusing on the arm swing.
- Visual impairment: use a high-contrast ball and have the tosser give a sound cue on release.
- Lower fitness: limit to three jumps in a row and rest in the tosser role.
Learning goals
- Coordinate a three-step approach with a two-foot takeoff.
- Contact the ball above the net with an open hand.
- Land safely after jumping.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 10
- low net: 2
- flat disc cones: 12
Teacher tip
Many students stop before jumping: stress that the last two steps are the fastest. Lower the net to about 7 feet on one court for students who cannot reach yet.
