Three-Lane Running Pass Waves
Groups of three run the court passing on the move, with no dribbling, and finish with a shot on goal. Students practice passing and catching at speed, the three-step rule, and timing their runs with teammates.
How to play
- Use cones to mark three lanes down the court, 5 yards apart. Groups of three line up on the end line, one player per lane.
- On the whistle, the group runs toward the goal passing at chest height with no dribbling; the middle player catches from one side and passes to the other.
- Three steps max with the ball, and every pass leads the receiver. At 9 meters, the last player to catch it takes a set shot.
- The group jogs back along the sidelines; the next group goes when the previous one crosses half court. After 5 minutes, rotate so everyone plays the middle.
- Last 5 minutes: group challenge, counting waves that end in a goal with at least six passes and no dropped ball.
Rules
- No dribbling: if the ball hits the floor, that wave does not score.
- No one steps inside the 6-meter goal area to shoot.
- Safety: return outside the lanes and do not shoot until the goalie is ready.
Variations
Easier
Allow one dribble per player and use a foam ball.
Standard
No-dribble groups of three, a set shot to finish, and six passes to score.
Harder
A passive defender at 9 meters must be beaten with a pass before shooting.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays the middle lane walking or in a wheelchair; the group matches the pace and uses bounce passes.
- Autism or shyness: keep the same group all period and add a visual start signal.
- Fitness level: the fastest runners start 2 yards behind the end line.
Learning goals
- Pass and catch on the run without losing speed.
- Apply the three-step rule.
- Use the full width of the court in sync with the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 9
- cones: 12
- goal: 1
Teacher tip
The classic mistake is passing to where a teammate is, not where they are going, so keep cueing 'lead the runner.' Space the waves so groups do not pile up at the goal.
