Third-Man Combination Trios
In groups of three, one player passes to a teammate checking back, who one-touches the ball through to a third player running onto it toward a small goal. Students practice combination passing, forward runs, and timing.
How to play
- Form groups of three (with 25 students, one group of four where the fourth defends) and give each group a triangle of cones 10 yards apart and a small goal 15 yards away.
- Step 1 (4 min): A passes to B, who checks back; B one-touches a through ball to C, who runs from the third cone, dribbles in, and scores. Rotate positions.
- Step 2 (4 min): a passive defender marks B, who must angle the pass to C without turning.
- Step 3 (6 min): live 3v1 to the small goal. A goal from a third-man combination is worth 3; any other goal is worth 1.
- Wrap-up (2 min): When should C start the run, before or after the first pass?
Rules
- C may not run before A passes, so students learn the timing.
- Passes stay on the ground, and B plays one-touch in the layoff.
- Each group shoots only at its own small goal and waits until it is clear of balls.
Variations
Easier
B may take a touch before passing, and the triangle shrinks to 8 yards.
Standard
One-touch combination, first without defense and then 3v1 with 3-point goals.
Harder
Play 3v2, and C must finish first-time without dribbling.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student always plays as A or B, with no long runs.
- Autism: number the cones and repeat the sequence with the same words every round.
- Higher skill level: the student runs the combination with the weaker foot only.
Learning goals
- Combine with a supporting teammate to find a third player on the run.
- Time a forward run to match the moment of the pass.
- Choose the right combination when a defender is present.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 8
- cones: 24
- small goals: 8
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is that C starts late and stands waiting for the ball, so cue the run with the word go on the first pass. Space the triangles well so balls do not cross.
