Team Tabata: Captain's Choice
Four-minute Tabata blocks (20 seconds of work, 10 seconds of rest, eight times) in which a different team captain chooses and leads two exercises. It builds endurance through high-intensity interval training and develops leadership within the group.
How to play
- Explain the Tabata format and play an interval timer track with work and rest cues. Form five teams of five, each with a deck of 12 exercise cards sorted into legs, arms, core and cardio (3 min).
- Each team names three captains who take turns. For block 1, the first captain picks two cards from different categories and demonstrates them (1 min).
- Block 1 (4 min): the team alternates the two exercises across eight 20-second intervals, with the captain out front setting the pace and cheering.
- 1-minute break: get water while the second captain picks cards. Block 2 (4 min).
- 1-minute break and block 3 (4 min) with the third captain. No team may repeat a card already used.
- Debrief: each team shares which block was hardest and why that combination was so tiring (2 min).
Rules
- Every card has a low-impact version anyone can choose without asking.
- The captain can't pair two exercises from the same category.
- During the 10-second rest, breathe standing or walking, not lying down.
- Keep at least 6 feet between students to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Use 15 seconds of work and 15 of rest and only two blocks.
Standard
Three 20/10 Tabata blocks with a different captain for each.
Harder
Four blocks, and the captain must include one cardio exercise in each.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the deck includes seated cards (shadow boxing, arm raises, trunk twists), and the student can also be captain.
- Shy students: the captain can lead from their spot instead of out front and choose cards with a partner.
- Low fitness level: work at 60–70% or always use the low-impact version.
Learning goals
- Use the Tabata method as a form of interval training.
- Combine exercises from different categories to balance the workload.
- Take on a leadership role and motivate the team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music (interval timer): 1
- cards: 60
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
True high intensity lasts only 20 seconds: encourage hard work with good form and make sure nobody skips water during breaks. Laminate the decks so you can reuse them.
