Team Handball with Peer Mediators
A no-ref 5-on-5 team handball game where two student mediators step in on any dispute with a quick protocol: stop, hear both sides, and offer a solution. Students practice resolving conflict peacefully, self-control, and fair play.
How to play
- Make 4 teams of 6 in pinnies and set up two fields with goals or cones. Each field plays 5-on-5 and the two extra players act as mediators on the sideline (2 min).
- Explain the 30-second protocol (2 min): the mediator calls “Time,” each player involved explains what happened in one sentence without interrupting, and the mediator proposes a throw-in for one side, a do-over, or a jump ball.
- Play a 5-minute game: players call their own fouls and traveling. If they can't agree, they raise a hand and the mediator steps in.
- After the game, the mediator gives each team a 1-to-3 fair-play score that's added to the scoreboard (1 min).
- Rotate mediators each game and switch opponents: three 5-minute games including changes (19 min total).
Rules
- No arguing with the mediator: accept the solution and keep playing.
- If the same conflict comes up again, go to a jump ball.
- Safety: no grabbing, pushing, or hitting a shooter's arm; nobody enters the goal area.
- Three steps max with the ball and three seconds max without dribbling.
Variations
Easier
Play 4-on-4 with no goalies, scoring through cones, and the teacher supports the mediator.
Standard
Five-on-five with self-officiating and two mediators using the protocol.
Harder
The mediator can only ask questions: the players involved must agree on the solution.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serves as a fixed mediator and plays the last few minutes with a teammate who passes to them in open space.
- Autism: gets the protocol in writing and can hold up a card to request mediation without speaking.
- Lower fitness: plays goalie or uses free substitutions.
Learning goals
- Resolve game disputes through dialogue without arguing.
- Keep self-control in intense competitive moments.
- Self-officiate honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
At first they'll ask for mediation on everything; make it clear they should try to agree on their own first. Use a small, soft team handball to avoid injuries.
