Team Handball: Pivot Battles for Position at 6 Meters
A duel between a pivot and a defender on the 6-meter line: the pivot must win position with their body, within the rules, to receive from a passer and turn to shoot. Students work on pivot play, fair battles for space and the turning shot.
How to play
- Setup (2 min): on each half court, groups of 6: a passer on the 9-meter line, a pivot and a defender on the 6-meter line, a goalie and two waiting.
- Technique, unopposed (3 min): the pivot receives with their back to goal, pivots on one foot and shoots with a controlled fall toward the near post.
- Battle for position (4 min): the defender tries to stay between pivot and passer; the pivot uses their torso with the arm tucked in, no pushing, to seal and show a target hand.
- Full duel (4 min): the passer moves along the 9-meter line and has 8 seconds to hit the pivot; a pivot goal is 2 points, an intercepted pass is 1 point for the defender.
- Rotation: passer moves to pivot, pivot to defender, the defender waits and a new passer comes in; switch goalies every 3 minutes.
- Wrap-up (3 min): each pair discusses which contact was legal and which would have been a foul.
Rules
- No jersey grabbing, pushing with the hands or using elbows.
- Contact is torso only, with arms tucked in.
- The pivot doesn't step into the area before catching and shooting.
- Anyone uncomfortable with contact says so and plays without the battle.
Variations
Easier
The defender is passive and only blocks the passing lane, with no contact.
Standard
A legal battle for position and a pass within 8 seconds.
Harder
The passer has 5 seconds and a second defender helps from outside.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays passer from the 9-meter line or goalie in a smaller goal.
- Autism or contact sensitivity: plays without contact, winning position with footwork only.
- Lower fitness or strength: pair students of similar size and strength.
Learning goals
- Win position legally to receive the ball.
- Shoot on the turn from the pivot position.
- Tell legal contact from a foul and respect the opponent.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handball: 6
- goals: 2
- cones: 8
- pinnies: 10
Teacher tip
Match students by size and strength so the battle is fair. Stop play as soon as you see hands pushing and reteach the arm position.
