Team Handball: Name That Defense
The defending team secretly draws a card with a system (6-0, 5-1, 3-2-1 or man-to-man) and plays it. The offense must recognize it within the first passes, call it out and choose the right solution. It builds game reading and quick tactical adjustments.
How to play
- Review the four systems on a whiteboard (3 min) with one key idea to attack each: 6-0 = long-range shots and the pivot; 5-1 = freeze the front defender; 3-2-1 = attack through the wings; man-to-man = screens and cuts.
- Make teams of 6 plus a goalkeeper; the defending team draws a card without showing it and sets up in that system.
- The offense has until the third pass for its center to call out the system; a correct call earns 1 point.
- Play out the possession: a goal after a correct call is worth 2 more points; the defense earns 1 point for each steal or save.
- Switch roles after 4 possessions. Play 3 rounds per team (about 15 minutes total).
Rules
- Only the center can call the system, and only gets one guess.
- Frontal contact only, no grabbing or pushing; the goal area is for the goalkeeper only.
- No jersey grabbing in man-to-man; the first warning means losing the possession.
Variations
Easier
Use only two systems (6-0 and man-to-man), which are easy to tell apart.
Standard
Four possible systems, a call before the third pass and points for scoring after a correct call.
Harder
The defense can switch systems mid-possession on the goalkeeper's signal, and the offense has to call it again.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can be the "analyst" who calls the system from the sideline instead of the center.
- For students who are hard of hearing, also show the system with fingers (6, 5, 3 or a fist for man-to-man).
- If skill levels are uneven, give the weaker team one extra pass to recognize the system.
Learning goals
- Recognize team handball defensive systems by where players line up.
- Choose an attacking solution that fits each system.
- Play a specific defensive system with discipline.

Teacher tip
The 5-1 and 3-2-1 get mixed up at first, so have students count how many defenders are away from the 6-meter line. It works great as an assessment after practicing each system separately.
