Team Handball: Lose It, Then Press or Retreat 4v4
A 4v4 game where, after losing the ball, the closest player pressures the ball carrier and the others sprint back to their area; if they win it back within 5 seconds, they get to shoot with an advantage. Students work on defensive transition, counterpressing and getting back on defense.
How to play
- Setup (2 min): two half courts, four teams of 5 (4 plus a goalie) and a midcourt zone marked with cones where pressing is allowed.
- Walk-through (3 min): the teacher loses the ball on purpose and shows both roles: the closest player presses in the marked zone; the other three get back to the 6-meter line.
- 4v4 game (6 min): if the team that lost the ball wins it back within 5 seconds, their goal is worth 3; if the opponent shoots before all three defenders are back, their goal is worth 2; a normal goal is 1.
- Time-out (2 min): each team names its usual presser and decides whether to have two players press.
- Second game (6 min): apply each team's decision; the teacher blows the whistle to freeze a transition and check whether three players are back.
- Wrap-up (3 min): teams count how many times they won the ball back within 5 seconds and how many goals they gave up by not getting back.
Rules
- Press the ball without touching the opponent; no grabbing.
- Get back while watching the ball to avoid collisions.
- Only the goalie may be in the 6-meter area.
- On the whistle, everyone freezes in place.
Variations
Easier
A regain goal counts within 8 seconds and the opponent must make two passes before shooting.
Standard
One player presses, three get back, and regains count within 5 seconds.
Harder
Two players must press and regains count only within 4 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays goalie or acts as the timer counting the 5 seconds out loud.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher uses a visual signal to freeze play.
- Lower fitness: takes the get-back role, which involves fewer sprints than pressing.
Learning goals
- React immediately after losing the ball.
- Coordinate one player's pressure with the others getting back.
- Make team decisions about how to defend the transition.
Equipment for a class of 25

- goals: 4
- pinnies: 10
- cones: 10

Teacher tip
Teams tend to forget about getting back and everyone presses: freeze play and count out loud who's back. Rotate the presser so everyone gets a turn.
