Team Handball Give-and-Go 2-on-2
A small-sided game of two attackers against two defenders and a goalie, where a goal off a give-and-go counts double. Students work on cutting after the pass, catching on the move, and defending as a pair with help.
How to play
- Split each goal into two halves with cones (left and right). A 2-on-2 runs in each half at the same time with a shared goalie; other pairs wait behind 12 meters.
- The attacking pair receives the ball from the teacher or a center passer and has 15 seconds to shoot.
- The give-and-go: pass to your partner, cut into the gap between defenders, and get the ball back on the run to shoot.
- Goal off a give-and-go, 2 points; any other goal, 1; a steal or goalie save earns the defense 1.
- Rotate after every attack: attackers to defense, defenders to the line, and a new pair comes in. Change goalies every 4 minutes.
Rules
- One dribble per player per attack.
- Defenders may not hold; a clear foul gives a free throw from 9 meters.
- Safety: the two games at one goal do not shoot at the same time; the goalie points to who shoots first.
Variations
Easier
Half-speed defenders who can only intercept passes.
Standard
2-on-2 with 15 seconds and double points for a give-and-go.
Harder
No dribbling and only 10 seconds to finish.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the permanent center passer and chooses which pair gets the ball.
- Autism: keep a steady partner and show the give-and-go with a diagram on a whiteboard or card.
- Fitness level: match attackers and defenders of similar ability.
Learning goals
- Cut after passing to get open with an advantage.
- Finish on the run after the return pass.
- Defend as a pair and help a teammate.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 6
- cones: 8
- pinnies: 8
- goals: 2
Teacher tip
The typical mistake is passing and standing still, so cue 'pass and go' the moment the ball leaves their hands. If one side bogs down, switch the pairs' halves.
