Team Handball: First-Wave Fast Break off the Goalie Outlet
A direct fast break where the goalie, after a save or catch, sends a long outlet pass to a wing sprinting down the sideline, who shoots alone or with a defender chasing. Students work on the goalie's long pass, speed and shooting after a sprint.
How to play
- Setup (2 min): full court; a goalie in each goal, lines of wings in the corners at both ends and hoops on the floor near the opponent's 9-meter line as receiving zones.
- Long pass (3 min): the teacher takes a soft shot, the goalie catches and throws long to the wing already sprinting down the sideline; 1 point if they catch it in the hoop without slowing down.
- First wave (4 min): the wing catches, takes at most three steps or dribbles and shoots at the far goal; the other goalie tries to save.
- With a chaser (5 min): a defender leaves the 6-meter line at the same time as the wing and tries to catch up without touching, only to pressure the shot.
- Rotation: the wing joins the chaser line on the far side and the chaser joins the wing line; goalies switch every 4 minutes.
- Wrap-up (4 min): back-to-back fast breaks in both directions; the team with more goals in 4 minutes wins.
Rules
- The chaser may not touch or push the shooter.
- The long pass is thrown on a firm line, never at someone's head.
- Lines in the corners wait behind the end line.
- Shoot without stepping into the area before the jump.
Variations
Easier
The goalie's pass may bounce once and the wing starts from midcourt.
Standard
A long pass on the run and a shot with a chaser.
Harder
The wing must catch in the hoop without dribbling and finish with a jump shot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays goalie in a smaller goal or acts as the passer who starts the break from midcourt.
- Hearing impairment: signal the start by raising a colored hoop.
- Lower fitness: runs only half the court, receiving from a teammate at midcourt.
Learning goals
- Throw an accurate long outlet pass from the goal.
- Sprint down the sideline to catch the ball on the run.
- Shoot effectively after a fast sprint.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handball: 10
- goals: 2
- cones: 8
- hoops: 4
Teacher tip
To avoid collisions, breaks in each direction always use different sidelines. Remind wings to look back over their shoulder as they run to receive.
