Team Handball: Fast Throw-Off After a Goal
A 6v6 team handball game where, after every goal, the team that conceded throws off from the center as fast as possible to attack a defense that has not recovered yet. Students work on quick restarts, getting back after scoring, and communication.
How to play
- Teams of 6 (5 plus a goalkeeper) in pinnies plus a spare team; keep a spare ball at center court (2 min).
- Walk-through (4 min): after a goal, the goalkeeper quickly passes to a teammate in the center circle, who throws off with one foot on the line; meanwhile, the team that scored sprints back to its goal area.
- Game (2 x 6 min): a goal within 10 seconds of the throw-off is worth 2 points; the scoring team earns 1 point if all 6 players are back in their half before the other team crosses midcourt.
- Between halves (2 min): each team names who throws off and who runs ahead first.
- Switch teams and debrief (2 min): how many goals came from the fast throw-off?
Rules
- The throw-off counts only with one foot on the center line and after the referee's short whistle.
- The scoring team may not block the throw-off or stand in front of the ball.
- When getting back, run facing forward; nobody backpedals at full speed.
Variations
Easier
A fast-break goal within 15 seconds and no point for getting back.
Standard
10 seconds for the fast throw-off goal and a point for a full recovery.
Harder
The goalkeeper may throw off from his or her own area, with a spare ball always ready.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: takes the throw-off, which requires little movement.
- Hearing impairment: the whistle comes with the referee's arm dropping.
- Lower fitness: plays goalkeeper or subs in and out every 2 minutes.
Learning goals
- Restart play quickly after conceding a goal.
- Get back in an organized way after scoring.
- Coordinate restart roles with the team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Team handballs: 4
- Goals: 2
- Pinnies: 21
- Cones: 10
- Whistle: 1
Teacher tip
The usual problem is that the scoring team celebrates and does not get back: the recovery point makes it visible. Keep a spare ball by center court so the throw-off never waits.
