Team Handball Fake Progression: Passive to Live Defense
In groups of three working in lanes, the attacker learns the footwork fake and the shot fake against a defender who goes from statue to half-speed to live. Students practice deceiving an opponent, changing direction, and reading the defense.
How to play
- Mark 4 x 10-yard lanes with cones. Each lane has a group of three: attacker, defender in a pinnie in the middle, and passer at the far end.
- Statue phase (5 minutes): the attacker catches, plants hard to one side, and drives past the still defender on the other side.
- Half-speed phase (5 minutes): the defender slides and can touch the ball but not steal it; add a shot fake, cocking the arm before driving.
- Live phase (5 minutes): the defender tries to steal or cut off the path; the attacker scores by crossing the end line under control.
- Rotate after each try: attacker to defender, defender to passer, passer to attacker. Last 3 minutes: each group shows another its best fake.
Rules
- One dribble is allowed before the fake, never after.
- No holding or pushing; each attempt lasts 5 seconds max.
- Safety: keep 2 yards between lanes to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Statue phase only, with two dribbles allowed.
Standard
Full progression using both the footwork fake and the shot fake.
Harder
After beating the defender, shoot on a goal with a goalie at the end of the lane.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play half-speed defender in a narrower lane, or attack with a pass fake.
- Hearing impairment: signal phase changes by holding up a different colored pinnie.
- Fitness level: group students of similar ability so the live phase stays fair.
Learning goals
- Perform footwork and shot fakes with a change of pace.
- Read the defender and drive to the open side.
- Defend without illegal contact.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 8
- cones: 32
- pinnies: 8
Teacher tip
A fake fails when it is slow or unconvincing, so cue a hard plant and an explosive first step. Stay in the statue phase until most students have it down.
