Team Handball: Calling Passive Play with the Warning Signal
5v5 team handball games where a pair of student referees learns to call passive play: they raise an arm as a warning, and from that moment the attack has four passes to shoot. It builds officiating judgment and attacking with intent to score.
How to play
- Explain the adapted rule: if the attack is not trying to score, the referee raises an arm; from then on the team has at most four passes to shoot or loses possession (3 min).
- Judgment drill: 4 attackers vs. 3 defenders alternate attacks that go to goal with sideways passing that goes nowhere; two referees raise an arm when needed and a third counts passes out loud (5 min).
- Two cross-court fields and 5 groups of 5: four play 5v5 with a keeper and the fifth officiates, with two referees and a pass counter per field (2 min).
- Three 4-minute rounds; after each, one playing group rotates into officiating (13 min).
- Debrief: which warnings were clear, and which came too late or too early? (2 min).
Rules
- After the warning, the fourth pass must end in a shot or the ball turns over.
- The warning is canceled if a shot hits the keeper or post and the attack gets the ball back.
- The 6-meter (20 ft) goal area belongs to the keeper only.
- Safety: no grabbing, pushing or hitting the throwing arm; that is an automatic free throw.
Variations
Easier
Warning gives six passes, with one referee coached by the teacher.
Standard
Warning gives four passes, with a referee pair and a pass counter.
Harder
Referees must read the attack's cues (slowing down, passes that don't commit a defender) and explain each call after the round.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serves as pass counter or as a referee working from the sideline.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the warning is already visual; add a whistle plus a raised colored pinnie for the turnover.
- Advanced players: as attackers, must shoot before the third pass after the warning.
Learning goals
- Recognize when an attack stops trying to score.
- Use the warning signal and pass count with confidence.
- Attack toward goal with purpose to avoid passive play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 2
- team handball goals: 4
- pinnies: 20
- whistles: 4
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
The typical mistake is raising an arm too soon: only call it after two or three passes in a row with no threat.
