Team Handball: Back Draws In, Wing Finishes
A 2v1 plus goalie on the wing: the back attacks the gap to draw the defender and, when the defender steps up, passes to the wing, who shoots from the corner. Students work on wing play, drawing a defender and the wing shot.
How to play
- Setup (2 min): on each half court, a line of backs 10 m from the goal, a line of wings in the corner, one defender between them at the 6-meter line and a goalie.
- Unopposed (3 min): the back receives from the teacher, takes three steps toward goal and passes to the wing, who jumps into the area and shoots at the far post.
- With a defender (5 min): the back must attack the space between the defender and the middle; if the defender steps up, pass to the wing; if the defender stays with the wing, the back shoots.
- Scoring: a wing goal after drawing the defender is 2 points; a back's goal is 1 point; a steal or save is 1 point for the defense.
- Rotation (5 min): back moves to wing, wing to defender and defender to back; switch goalies every 3 minutes and switch sides halfway through.
- Wrap-up (3 min): 2v1 on both wings at once, switching sides on the whistle.
Rules
- The defender may only play the ball, never grab the shooter's arm.
- The wing may not step into the area before jumping.
- Always shoot away from the goalie's head.
- Lines wait off the court behind the cones.
Variations
Easier
The defender is passive and only raises their arms.
Standard
A 2v1 with a live defender and points for a wing goal after drawing in.
Harder
Add a second defender who leaves the middle late, turning it into a 2v2.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays the back from a fixed spot and passes to the wing, or plays goalie in a cone goal.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with bells and have the wing clap to signal where they are.
- Lower skill level: the wing shoots without jumping and from outside the area.
Learning goals
- Draw the defender by attacking the gap before passing.
- Shoot from the wing aiming for the far post.
- Choose between passing and shooting based on what the defender does.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handball: 10
- goals: 2
- cones: 10
- pinnies: 6
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is passing too early without threatening: the back has to really go to goal. Put a cone where the attack starts so students can judge the distance.
