Team Handball 4-on-4 with Sideline Neutrals
A 4-on-4 team handball game with two neutral players on each sideline who always play for the team on offense. The numbers advantage helps students use support players, cut into open space and move toward goal without losing the ball.
How to play
- Use cones to mark a field about 20 x 15 meters with two goals. Make teams of 4 plus a goalie and pick 4 neutrals in a different pinnie color, two per sideline (3 min).
- Neutrals only move along their sideline, cannot shoot and must pass the ball back within 3 seconds.
- The team with the ball attacks 6-on-4 using the neutrals; when they lose the ball, the neutrals switch to helping the other team.
- Play 4-minute games. After each game, the neutrals come onto the field and other players move to the sidelines.
- Play 4 games (about 16 min) so every student plays at least once as a neutral.
Rules
- A goal only counts if there was at least one pass to a neutral first.
- The 6-meter area, traveling and double-dribble rules apply.
- Neutrals cannot be guarded closer than 1 yard.
- No rough contact: defend face to face with the body, never from behind.
Variations
Easier
Put three neutrals on each sideline, and defenders may not intercept passes to the neutrals.
Standard
4-on-4 plus goalies with two neutrals per sideline.
Harder
Use only one neutral per sideline, and a goal is worth double if it comes from a neutral's pass to a cutting player.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: play as a sideline neutral the whole time with no defensive pressure.
- Shy students or students with autism: start as a neutral to take part with less pressure before entering the field.
- Lower fitness levels: the neutral role involves less running; rotate these students into it more often.
Learning goals
- Use outside support players to keep possession.
- Cut into open space after passing to a neutral.
- Switch quickly between offense and defense.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 2
- goals: 2
- pinnies: 14
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
If teams just pass to the neutrals without moving forward, limit them to two sideline passes in a row. Explain that neutrals help but do not run the game.
