Team Handball: 3-2-1 Defense and Anticipation
Students learn the open 3-2-1 defense, set up in three staggered lines that try to intercept passes and win the ball to launch the fast break. It builds anticipation, help between lines and defensive footwork.
How to play
- Use cones to mark the three lines: three defenders on the 6-meter line, two at 8 meters on the backs and one front defender at 10 meters across from the center.
- Shifting without the ball (4 min): the offense passes the ball by hand around the court and the defense moves as a unit; the defender closest to the ball steps out and the rest close in.
- Play 6-on-6 with a goalkeeper (12 min): the defense plays 3-2-1; each interception is worth 2 points and each steal that ends in a fast-break goal is worth 3. The offense gets 1 per goal.
- Switch roles every 5 attacks; the resting group watches the front defender and counts their steals.
- Final 4 minutes: the offense deliberately attacks the gaps they spotted so the defense can practice help.
Rules
- To intercept, go for the ball, not the attacker's body; no tackling or grabbing.
- No stealing the ball by slapping the shooter's hand.
- After a steal, the fast break has no pushing; a chasing player can't touch the shooter from behind.
Variations
Easier
The offense may only use bounce passes or 2 dribbles max, so it's easier to anticipate.
Standard
6-on-6 against a 3-2-1 defense with points for interceptions and fast breaks.
Harder
The offense adds a fixed pivot and crosses between backs, and the defense must switch assignments without losing its shape.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can play goalkeeper or be a 6-meter line defender with a smaller zone.
- For students with autism or who are shy, give them a fixed defensive spot and explain the job in one sentence.
- For fitness, rotate the front defender spot, the most demanding one, every 3 attacks.
Learning goals
- Organize an open 3-2-1 defense with three staggered lines.
- Anticipate passing lanes to intercept and start the fast break.
- Cover gaps by helping teammates.

Teacher tip
The 3-2-1 falls apart if everyone jumps at once, so stress that only the defender closest to the ball steps out. It's very intense: alternate it with calmer phases or observation.
