Tchoukball Three-Pass Attack
A two-frame tchoukball game in which every attack may use at most three passes before shooting, and the defense earns possession by catching the rebound. It builds quick ball movement, purposeful shooting, and contact-free defensive positioning.
How to play
- Place a frame at each end of a 26 x 16-yard court with a 3-yard forbidden zone; form 4 teams of 6 in pinnies (one student rotates in as a sub).
- Explain the modified rules (3 min): no contact and no interceptions; defenders only position themselves to catch the rebound, and a team may shoot at either frame.
- The attacking team makes no more than three passes, then shoots; if the rebound lands inside the court without a defender catching it, the attackers score 1 point.
- If a defender catches the rebound, their team attacks from that spot; if the shot misses the frame or the rebound goes out, the other team gets the point.
- A team may not shoot at the same frame three times in a row.
- Play 5-minute games (two teams on court, two watching and keeping score) and rotate for 4 games; between games, give each team 1 minute to adjust its defensive setup.
Rules
- No contact with opponents and no attempts to take the ball from them.
- With the ball in hand, take no more than three steps and hold it no longer than 3 seconds.
- No one steps into the forbidden zone in front of the frame.
- Safety: defenders stay at least 3 yards from the shooter at the moment of the shot.
Variations
Easier
Allow five passes and let the ball bounce once on the catch.
Standard
Three passes max, two frames, and a point for an uncaught rebound.
Harder
Every player on the team must touch the ball across the last two attacks before shooting again.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student gets 5 seconds of possession and their shot counts double if the rebound drops.
- Shy students: start as the score-keeper for the watching team and join in for the second game.
- Lower fitness: play 5 on 5 on a shorter court.
Learning goals
- Move the ball quickly and shoot at the right moment.
- Position on defense to cover the rebound area.
- Play a no-contact sport while respecting opponents' safety.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tchoukball frame: 2
- team handballs: 2
- pinnies: 24
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Tchoukball takes contact out of the game, so stop any attempt to intercept or push right away. Have the watching team count passes and points to keep them engaged.
