Tactical Scoreboard Invasion Game
A modified team handball game where, besides goals, teams score for winning the ball in the opponent's half and stringing passes together. Students practice keeping, advancing, scoring, and winning back the ball, and learn to read what the team needs at each moment.
How to play
- Set up two 100 x 60 ft cross-court fields with small goals and a cone midline. Make 4 teams of 6 or 7; play 5 on 5 with one scorekeeper per team on the sideline (3 min).
- Scoring: 6 passes in a row earns 1 point; winning the ball in the opponent's half earns 1 point; a goal is worth 2. A goal within 3 passes of winning the ball high adds 1 bonus point.
- No goalies: nobody enters a 10 ft semicircle in front of the goal. Players may take 3 steps and dribble once.
- Play 2 halves of 6 minutes; the scorekeeper tallies each point type on the whiteboard in its own color and switches every 3 minutes (12 min).
- Each team studies its whiteboard for 2 minutes: where did the points come from, and what would they change? Play a final 4-minute period using that change.
Rules
- No contact: no slapping the ball out of hands and no pushing.
- If a point is disputed, the defending team's scorekeeper decides.
- Safety: shoot from outside the semicircle and never within 10 ft of anyone.
Variations
Easier
Only 4 passes are needed for a possession point.
Standard
Five on five with all three point types plus the bonus.
Harder
A goal only counts if every attacker has touched the ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student serves as scorekeeper and strategist or plays midfield with a 6 ft no-pressure bubble; their passes count double.
- Autism: give a card showing the three point types and let the student start as scorekeeper.
- Fitness level: the student may sub out at any time and defend only in their own half.
Learning goals
- Analyze which play gives the team the biggest advantage.
- Press right after losing the ball to win it back far from your goal.
- Respect the scorekeeper's calls and the final result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 2
- small goals: 4
- pinnies: 13
- cones: 16
- whiteboards: 2
Teacher tip
Some teams only chase goals and give away possession points; during the break, have them compare the numbers. Change the point values so students see how tactics shift.
