Student-Run Track Meet with Student Officials
The class runs a small track meet where teams take turns competing and serving as starters, timers, measurers and scorekeepers. Students work on independence, responsibility in their roles and applying the basic rules of each event.
How to play
- 5 teams of 5. Set up three events: 50 m dash, long jump and medicine ball throw, with a 4x50 relay at the end (3 min).
- Assign roles: each round, two teams compete and the other three run one event as officials (start and finish, measuring and scorekeeping), using a role card (3 min).
- Six-minute rounds: the two competing teams go through their assigned event with 2 tries per student while officials record the marks on the scorecard (18 min).
- After each round, teams switch roles and events following the chart the teacher has posted (part of the rounds).
- Final 4x50 relay with all teams; finish judges decide the order and the scorekeeping team works out the standings (5 min).
Rules
- Officials apply simple rules: a false start gets a warning, a jump is a foul if the foot lands past the board, and a throw counts only inside the sector.
- In the throwing area, throw only on the official's signal and with the landing area clear.
- Officials' calls are respected; any doubts are settled by the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Hold only two events, with the teacher as head official at each.
Standard
Three events plus a relay, rotating between competing and officiating.
Harder
Teams also design the event schedule and the scoring table for the meet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student competes in adapted versions and may be head official of one event for the whole meet.
- Autism: give the student a card with their role and tasks in order, and keep the same role if that feels safer.
- Beginners: choose one of the three events for an extra try.
Learning goals
- Organize and run a track meet independently.
- Carry out an official or scorekeeping role responsibly.
- Apply the basic rules for running, jumping and throwing events.

Post a large rotation chart before starting; if the switches are unclear, a lot of time gets lost.
